【Explanation】 During the New Coronary Pneumonia epidemic, sports safety has become the focus of public attention. The two recent sudden deaths of students wearing N95 masks have made "Whether to wear masks for exercise or fitness" a hot topic. On May 8th, a reporter from China News Service interviewed Li Xuemei, a teacher at the School of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation of Beijing Sport University. She gave her own opinions on the sports safety issues of high concern.

Li Xuemei said that the increased air resistance of people breathing after wearing a mask is equivalent to artificially increasing the burden on their own respiratory muscles, and the risk of sudden death during physical exercise will increase accordingly.

Everyone knows that in the course of strenuous exercise, our breathing deepens and accelerates. It has been very laborious. After wearing a mask, it actually increases the (breathing) resistance. This resistance is not only due to the decrease in each time we ventilate, but also because the burden on our respiratory muscles increases. Combined with the "house" during the epidemic, the heart and lung function declines, so it leads to this increased risk.

【Explanation】 Li Xuemei suggested that, when outdoor conditions permit, people can take off their masks for brisk walking and other sports, and gradually transition from such low-intensity sports to normal physical exercise.

With the return to work and school, we can go out and start some outdoor activities. It is also recommended that where there are few people, we can take off the mask for continuous running or cycling. If it is in a crowded place, if you still want to exercise, then we recommend wearing a mask to reduce the risk. At this time, you can do it for a relatively short time and a relatively low intensity (exercise). For example, squat, we can complete 20 or 30 in a short time. The degree of breathing is not too great.

【Explanation】 In Li Xuemei's view, exercise and fitness is a lifestyle that needs to be maintained for a long time, and the amount of exercise cannot be greatly increased or decreased due to changes in the environment.

Regardless of whether there is a return to work, whether there is a return to school, indoors or outdoors, we should maintain (exercise) under the existing conditions, and always have a lifestyle to do. If you do not exercise regularly during the epidemic, after resuming work and returning to school, you feel that you have stepped outside and we have the opportunity to start exercising. Suddenly, you start to exercise intensively. One change is that we do not recommend it.

[Commentary] At present, stadiums and gymnasiums across the country are gradually opening up, and all parties have put safety first. In this regard, Li Xuemei said that under the current situation, people still need to control the time and intensity of physical exercise, especially in indoor places, they need to pay attention to protective measures.
