The Minister of National Education Jean-Michel Blanquer announced Thursday that "a million schoolchildren will be welcomed by about 130,000 teachers" next week, after the gradual entry into force of deconfinement. These are between "80% and 85%" of the 50,500 schools in France that will be open, "from May 12," said the minister after the presentation of the government deconfinement plan by Prime Minister Edouard Philippe.

In France, primary education (kindergarten and elementary) totals 6.7 million schoolchildren and 379,000 teachers. Back to school next week will affect less than one in six school children. Parents of students "must be informed personally this week by the school, which works with the town hall," said the minister.

Pre-return from Monday

“Monday May 11, all the teachers of the schools will make a pre-re-entry according to the local context (…) sometimes the pre-re-entry will also be on May 12”, added Jean-Michel Blanquer. The students will not return to school until Tuesday, May 12, or even a few days later, to give the establishments time to organize themselves. "It must be progressive," insisted the minister.

“We are not going to welcome all the students at the same time. The big sections of kindergarten, CP and CM2 will have priority, but there will be a lot of latitude locally, "he insisted, stressing that" this is not a return to school, it is a recovery ". "We have been able to work with the municipalities: between 87 and 90% have prepared the start of the school year for next week," he said.

Strict conditions

This recovery, which is subject to numerous criticisms, and which will only take place very gradually, is framed by an extremely strict health protocol. This “conditions the opening of each school and each establishment”, underlines an official circular published Monday evening.

For the principals, the organization of the recovery is a headache and puts a lot of pressure on their shoulders, as the sanitary constraints to be respected are severe. Repeated hand washing, wearing of a mandatory or recommended mask, staggered recreation: the hygiene rules which govern the health protocol seem particularly difficult to set up and to respect.
