The government is refining the final details of the deconfinement. A health council will be held Thursday, after which "all decisions will be given," said Emmanuel Macron. In the meantime, the President of the Republic will unveil Wednesday morning the first directions of the plan for the culture sector, strongly affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The death toll is now over 25,500 dead in France.

More than 25,500 dead, Hauts-de-France now in orange

The coronavirus epidemic has caused 330 additional deaths in 24 hours in France, for a total of 25,531 deaths since March 1, according to the last report given Tuesday evening. The pressure on resuscitation services continues to ease, with 266 Covid-19 patients less, but the total number of serious cases hospitalized in these services remains high at 3,430

The deconfinement map, produced by department, has changed: the Hauts-de-France region, which was red, turned orange due to "a decrease in hospital pressure", according to a press release from the General Directorate of Health. As a reminder, the green departments will be able to organize from May 11 a wider deconfinement than the others.

Macron at the bedside of the culture sector

Among the sectors strongly affected by the coronavirus crisis: that of culture. Emmanuel Macron will hold a videoconference on Wednesday morning with artists from different fields before announcing the first orientations of a "cultural plan". Beforehand, the Head of State will exchange for about two hours with artists from different fields (literature, dance, cinema, theater, contemporary circus, classical music, contemporary music, contemporary art).

While festivals and concerts are canceled for the entire summer, theaters and cinemas will remain closed until further notice and filming and rehearsals are suspended, the entire ecosystem of culture is being laminated by the pandemic and the need for distancing social. Tuesday, Franck Riester announced to work on a device of protection of the intermittent for the summer but without pronouncing on the "white year" for their rights which they claim.

Government working on details of deconfinement

As May 11 approaches, a defense (health) council will be held on Thursday. Emmanuel Macron assured that "all the decisions (on deconfinement) will be given" at its end. The government must notably fix for good the map of departments classified red or green according to their health situation and specify appropriate measures. But little differentiated, said the head of state.

"This red and green criterion is important, so on certain trips, on the opening of certain services, we will vary things a bit," he explained. The French should also expect after May 11 "constraints on long trips and controls", which "the government will give the rules" on Thursday.

Nearly 255,000 dead worldwide

The pandemic has killed at least 254,532 people worldwide, according to a report by AFP. Over 3.6 million cases have been officially diagnosed in 195 countries and territories. The United States is the most affected country in terms of both deaths and cases, with 70,115 deaths. The other countries most affected are the United Kingdom (29,427), Italy (29,315 dead), Spain (25,613) and France (25,531).

Accelerated deconfinement in Germany, the global economy still hit hard

In Germany, deconfinement is accelerating. Without waiting for a meeting scheduled for Wednesday on the subject between Chancellor Angela Merkel and the various regional states, the largest of these states, Bavaria, has unveiled its own program: reopening of restaurants from May 25, hotels on May 30. 

California, the first American state to have decreed containment, will begin to lighten certain measures at the end of the week, such as the reopening of businesses. Relaxation of restrictions in Hong Kong too, including the reopening of schools, cinemas and bars from Friday.

On the economic front, the bad news continues to accumulate. Airbnb, the online accommodation booking platform, announced Tuesday evening the dismissal of a quarter of its 7,500 employees. The French hydrocarbon giant Total announced that its profit had collapsed by 99% in the first quarter.
