Should access to beaches and the coast be authorized from May 11? As deconfinement looms, many voices are raised in Brittany to influence the Government which has decided to extend the ban at least until the beginning of June. In the region, many local elected officials are leading the sling to demand that the sea be returned to their fellow citizens. This is the case of Loïg Chesnais-Girard, president of the Brittany region, who actively campaigns for access to the coast to be authorized "as quickly as possible".

In #Bretagne, our beaches are our parks and gardens. I plead so that under the authority of the mayors, we can reopen them as quickly as possible without taking risks for our health. #promenades #sport # fishing #surf #sportdeglisse #plaisance pic.twitter.com/M3IupQUSW9

"The sea is part of our daily life and our balance of life," says the elected official, making himself the voice of the inhabitants of the coast. He cites as an example the islanders of Ouessant, Sein or Belle-Ile for whom "the coast is the garden, the public space". "I do not see how the closing of the coastline in these places is a measure of public health," he wonders.

Mayors decide whether or not to reopen

Aware that the Bretons' request can be perceived as "a whim seen from Paris or the Grand-Est", the region president assures that this reopening, if it must take place sooner, will be done in good intelligence. "Certain beaches will of course remain closed if the sanitary conditions do not allow them to be reopened," he said.

The Govt announced on Sunday its decision to reopen the forests 🌳. But why not the beaches? Metro yes, beaches no 🤔? According to him, it is up to the mayors that we must leave our hands on this file. "They are the ones who must define the conditions of access and the rules to ensure everyone's safety", indicates the elected official, insisting on the specificity of the Breton beaches where people are not glued to each other, "towel against towel ”.

To support his request, Loïg Chesnais-Girard finally mentions the forests which will again be accessible to the public from May 11. "I think that under the same conditions, we can open the coast with rules that allow us to manage social distancing," he argues.
