The little ones set off to explore their enclosure - Marineland

  • At the end of 2019, three white cubs were born at Marineland park in Antibes.
  • They have just made their first outing, without an audience due to the confinement.
  • Anti-capability activists denounce the presence of these animals on the Côte d'Azur.

Their first steps outside their den were to be made in public. Containment decided otherwise. After several months spent out of sight, closer to their mother, the three white cubs born in Marineland in late 2019 went out to visit their enclosures, announced the animal park in Antibes, still closed, on Monday.

The little female and the two males, who now weigh around twenty kilos each (against 500 grams at birth), have also passed into the hands of the trainers who have ensured their good health. And all is fine. The park's new residents were "curious and intrepid, but still a bit clumsy" during their first explorations, advance Damien Montay, the zoological director of Marineland.

Very rare triplet births

The birth of these young, from Flocke, the female of Marineland and Rasputin, transferred since then to another park in Great Britain, was "excellent news for the European Breeding Program (EEP) in which Marineland participates", had insisted the park. The triplets represent only 2.5% of polar bear births.

But the “happy event” shared by the Antibes center is not one for anti-aptitude associations. “We are not happy about it. In June 2018, we were alerting about the living conditions of polar bears in the South of France ”, points out in particular that is enough.

A climate "totally harmful for them"

A petition launched then for the transfer of Rasputin, suffering, according to these animal advocates, from the heat of the Côte d'Azur, collected more than 270,000 signatures.

"We will continue to fight so that such animals are no longer kept in a completely harmful climate for them", further supports the association. In 2018, Marineland management had brought a bailiff into the polar bear enclosure to be able to observe the presence of ice caves and shaded areas.

The park, closed at least until June 30, gave itself until May 11 to find names for its new residents. The public is called to vote via a website.
