Mecca witnessed an astronomical phenomenon that occurred in conjunction with sunset and was seen with the naked eye.

The Emirate of Makkah Al-Mukarramah region stated on Twitter that "Mecca, on Thursday night, witnessed the moon's perpendicularity over the Kaaba at 6:29:55 pm in conjunction with sunset in the phenomenon of sighting with the naked eye."

The astronomical society in Jeddah said in a report that the moon was a bright disk (87.7 percent) and a distance of 368.051 km.

She added that this astronomical phenomenon helps in knowing the direction of the qiblah in a simple way in several regions around the world, as the ancients did, because the position of the moon at this moment refers completely to the location of Mecca and with high accuracy as is the case in modern smart phone applications.
