It is an unprecedented May 1 that France will experience on Friday, while the coronavirus epidemic is still raging and the modalities of deconfinement are gradually taking shape. The provisional map of the "red", "orange" and "green" departments was revealed on Thursday evening. Follow the situation live.

The deconfinement is being prepared and we see, little by little, day after day, the main lines. The provisional map of the "red", "orange" and "green" departments was unveiled Thursday evening: it will serve as a basis for knowing what measures will be taken in which departments, according to their fragility in the face of the virus. Meanwhile, the epidemic continues to kill. The coronavirus has caused 339 additional deaths in France in the past 24 hours, bringing the total toll to 24,376 deaths since March 1. Follow the situation live.

The main information to remember

  • 24,376 people died in France, but the number of intensive care patients continues to decline
  • On this confined May 1, florists will not be able to sell lily of the valley on the streets
  • The department maps, classified according to the red, orange or green color code, were presented

Deconfinement: the first government cards unveiled

The first maps of the coronavirus epidemic were presented Thursday evening by the Minister of Health Olivier Véran, depending on the health situation. They are based on circulation of the virus and the state of hospital capacity. In total, 35 departments are in "red", including the whole of Île-de-France.

These maps, drawn up in anticipation of the deconfinement that will begin on May 11, divide the metropolitan and overseas departments between "red", green "and" oranges "and will be revised daily until May 7, said the minister. The map drawn up on this date of May 7, which will include only two categories ("green" or "red"), will serve as a reference for the implementation of deconfinement. In green areas, a lesser presence of the virus will allow organize a wider deconfinement. If you want to know the color of your department, find out in our article here.

A confined May 1

The confined May 1 will ultimately bring little luck to florists: they are allowed to sell thrush on Friday only for delivery or pick-up on their doorstep. Epidemic requires. And this despite a relentless forcing to try to obtain from the government an authorization for direct sale in front of their stores of precious white bells, which bring them some 7 million euros in turnover each year. More details in our article here.

This unprecedented May 1 will also take place without a protest procession, even if the claims are there. The PS, the PCF, EELV and Generations ask for example to the government to abandon the unemployment insurance reform in order to "not add to the health crisis an economic and social carnage", in a letter addressed to Prime Minister Edouard Philippe on the occasion of May 1st. The unions are also calling for the abandonment of this reform decided last year when unemployment fell. The National Rally and the rebellious France also asked to put an end to it.

At the start of the coronavirus crisis, the executive suspended until September the second part of its reform, which tightens the calculation of the allowance for precarious workers, and which was to come into force on April 1. On the other hand, the rule already in force on November 1, which tightens the conditions of access (having worked six months in the last 24 months instead of 4 months out of 28) and reloading of rights, is still valid. The Ministry of Labor announced Monday that it would initiate "a reflection with the social partners" to "quickly adapt" the unemployment insurance rules.

Resuscitation admissions still declining

The coronavirus has caused 339 additional deaths in France in the past 24 hours, bringing the total toll to 24,376 deaths since March 1, announced Thursday the Director General of Health, Professor Jérôme Salomon. Resuscitation services again show a negative balance of minus 188 patients compared to the previous day, bringing their total to 4,019, he said. A peak had been reached on April 9 with nearly 7,200 patients

In detail, 191 deaths have been recorded in the hospital since Wednesday, to which are added 98 deaths social and medico-social establishments including the Ehpad, specified the director general of Health.
As of Thursday, there were still 26,283 patients hospitalized for Covid-19 infection. But nearly 50,000 patients (49,476) have been able to leave the hospital cured since the start of the epidemic, underlined Jérôme Salomon.

In addition, four regions account for 71% of patients who remain in intensive care, said the Directorate General for Health: these are Ile de France (40%), Grand Est (13%), Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (9%) and Hauts-de-France (9%).
