Wearing a surgical mask requires following a few rules. - Julien KNAUB / SIPA

  • As single-use masks will be sold starting Monday, an infographic showing how to wear a surgical mask is posted on Facebook.
  • This infographic is wrong, says a specialist.
  • This specialist explains the gestures to properly wear a mask of this type, as well as a fabric mask.

A gesture that will become daily? The wearing of the mask will become general from May 11, the date of the gradual deconfinement announced by Edouard Philippe. This gesture, which is in addition to other barrier measures such as hand washing, requires respecting a few rules.

A misleading infographic about this is posted on Facebook. She explains that an "infected person" must, to avoid contaminating others, wear a mask with "the blue part facing out", because it "does not contain a filter". Conversely, a “healthy person” must carry the blue part towards him and the white part, “which contains the filter which retains particles and micro-organisms”, must be outside.

This infographic "is false," explains Pierre Parneix, medical officer of health at the Bordeaux University Hospital , to 20 Minutes . "The filter layer of a mask is always in the middle," he says. These masks are made up of three layers, with a colored layer, a filtering layer and a white layer.

To properly wear a mask of this type, just follow a few gestures. WHO recommends washing your hands with a hydroalcoholic solution or with soap and water. Then unfold the mask. "In general, the colored side is on the outside, the white side on the inside," explains Pierre Parneix. Overall, when you unroll your mask, it has a rounded shape. The convex shape is the outside and the concave shape is the inside. We put it with the nasal bar on the top. "

The mask is manipulated by the elastic bands. It is then necessary to pull to deploy it correctly on the nose and the mouth and to adjust the nasal bar. Some models have fasteners, which are tied above and below the ears. Once the mask is put on, the WHO recommends "to avoid touching it".

To remove it, grab the elastic bands. It is necessary to avoid that "the nose or the mouth do not find themselves in contact with the external face of the mask", underlines Pierre Parneix. These tips also apply to fabric masks with the Afnor pattern, adds Pierre Parneix. Finally, disposable masks should be immediately thrown away in a closed bin. Then wash your hands.

Single-use paper masks and washable masks will be sold from May 4 in certain supermarkets, the government confirmed on Wednesday.
