Dental offices remain open during confinement, only to handle emergencies. - A. Mourad

The stress related to the new coronavirus but also to confinement may have pushed you to make some excesses. In particular in your consumption of tobacco, coffee, snacking ... Conversely, you could have sinned by default in oral hygiene, by laziness or because in videoconferencing, we see less the piece of salad stuck between the teeth, and we don't smell either ... Anyway, your teeth and gums have certainly taken a hit, and the care you had to do before March 16 is now more than necessary. Some of our readers have asked us the following questions:

"I have to have a tooth extracted, when will the dentists resume their activity?" »Delorme

"Are dentists going to reopen soon?" I absolutely need a descaling! »Thomas

“I have to go to my family dentist, which is 16 km from my home, to stop a dental abscess. Can we force him to contact another closer to my home? »Berhouet

Here are the answers we found:

Good news for dentists (and their patients), whose offices closed on March 18 to limit the spread of Covid-19. They will be able to resume their activity from May 11, the date of the end of confinement in France.

Gradual reopening. But "gradually," had already warned the president of the National Order of Dental Surgeons (ONCD), Serge Fournier, on April 17, during a broadcast by the French Dental Association (ADF) broadcast on YouTube. In what proportions, and, above all, under what conditions? The profession should find out this Wednesday: a guide to good practice, developed by the profession and validated by the High Authority for Health, to be presented.

The closure of dental offices did not mean the end of patient care. In any case, those related to an emergency, such as toothaches, painful cavities or other infections. As a first reflex, the patient must contact his usual dentist, remind Medicare and the Service-public.fr site.

Emergency number. If the practitioner considers that your problem cannot wait, he will then ask you to call the national number dedicated to the management of emergency oral care, set up by the ONCD and operational to relieve congestion on the 15th, and operational since March 26. This is 09 705 00 205. A brochure, below, has also been published to detail the procedure to follow.

The patient can therefore call the emergency number directly if he does not have a regular dentist or if he cannot reach him. There is no respondent, the patient will have to enter the numbers of his department for a call forwarding.

In addition, know that the French Union of oral health (UFSBD) has published a sheet written by its experts in order to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, let alone good oral hygiene, during confinement: keep regular meal times, limit the consumption of sugary foods, improve your teeth brushing technique ...
