From this Monday, the 6,000 inhabitants of the archipelago of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon will be able to get out of confinement, announced the Minister for Overseas Annick Girardin, in a press release published this Saturday, specifying that activity would not resume only gradually depending on the sector.

So far, the two islands close to Canada have only recorded one confirmed case of contamination with the new coronavirus at this stage.

Resumption of classes between May 4 and 6

The forms derogating to justify exits will disappear from Monday but the population is called to continue to respect the barrier gestures, explained in the evening the prefect Thierry Devimeux on the local television channel SPM the 1st. On this date, work will be able to resume in the vast majority of businesses and shops, with the exception of bars, restaurants and nightclubs, knowing that for the latter, the situation will be studied "from May 15, to define a calendar adapted, "he said.

The administrations will also reopen, but without welcoming the public, the terms of which “remain to be considered”. For schools, it will take a few more days. The teachers' return will be on May 4. For kindergarten and elementary school students, it will be "probably" on May 5 and for secondary school students the next day.

Air and river traffic to resume on May 11

Each establishment will have to hold a "health and safety committee" in order to define the barrier measures to put into practice, also said the prefect. Another stage of deconfinement: sea and air exchanges between the two islands will resume on May 11, as well as pleasure craft. On the other hand, the resumption of associative activities, in particular sports, will be studied "after May 15". And large gatherings remain prohibited "at least until the end of June," said Thierry Devimeux, adding that extended meetings with family or friends were "not recommended".

Strict border control will continue, which means limiting flights to Canada, automatic and controlled fortnight of arrivals and a test at the end of isolation. The prefect said that a review of the gradual deconfinement would be carried out every two weeks, in order to verify that the different stages "did not cause any health disaster". He did not rule out ordering a new containment if necessary.
