End of controversy for Korian? Korian has recorded 606 deaths from the coronavirus in its retirement homes in France where 23,000 people live, said Monday Sophie Boissard, the group's general manager, who denounces the attacks against her.

"To date, out of 23,000 residents, we deplore 606 deaths linked to Covid-19, mainly in Ile-de-France and in the Grand-Est region," specifies Sophie Boissard in an interview with the Parisian . On April 10, the Korian group had recorded 356 deaths linked to the epidemic.

Two-thirds of establishments spared

"Fifteen establishments have suffered more than a dozen deaths" while "two thirds" of the 308 accommodation establishments for dependent elderly people (Ehpad) managed by Korian in France "are spared", adds T -she.

The European number one in retirement homes, also present in Germany, Benelux and Italy, has notably recorded nearly forty deaths out of 109 residents in its Ehpad La Riviera in Mougins (Alpes-Maritimes). This situation has raised questions and criticisms, in particular on the implementation of barrier gestures. "All means have been used everywhere" to protect residents, says Sophie Boissard, who denounces the "unspeakable attacks" to which Korian is subjected.

3,000 people recruited during the epidemic

The group limited visits from February 25, generalized the wearing of the mask on March 21 and recruited 3,000 people to deal with the epidemic, according to its director general. Quoting the establishment of Mougins, where the referent of each family was "alerted in time", she nevertheless recognizes that the group should "perhaps have had to organize a general communication".

Korian also launched on April 13 a “generalized screening plan”: “all the staff and residents of half of our nursing homes have already been tested. The other half will be done by May 6, ”says Sophie Boissard. In this difficult context, the Director General wishes to pay a bonus of 1,000 euros to "all of the staff".

At the same time, it plans to cut its own salary and bonuses by 2020 by 25% to feed a fund of one million euros which will finance "therapeutic research dedicated to the elderly and actions of solidarity with women". The members of the management committee will also contribute.

Controversy over the group's reaction

Korian's handling of the crisis provokes divergent comments among the unions: SUD, FO and the CGT deplored in a press release Monday a "massacre of deaths among residents", and denounced the "lack of reaction" of the management of the company to provide "sufficient protective equipment". Conversely, the CFDT and Unsa had castigated last week a "relentlessness" against Korian and a "treatment of information particularly dependent, on the part of certain media", against the private group.

"Personal protective equipment was bought in droves at the start of the epidemic and made available to our colleagues," said the two unions.

Over 8,000 deaths in retirement homes

According to the latest government figures, 8,654 deaths have been recorded in retirement homes, out of a total of 22,856 deaths in France. Gray zone since the beginning of the epidemic, deaths in the 7,500 nursing homes in France were until the end of March excluded from the official count taking into account only deaths in hospital.
