On April 16, 2020 local time, Australia, researchers explored the deep-sea canyons off the coast of Western Australia. Many new marine species were discovered, including the newest Apolemia specimen, which may be the longest recorded animal. Apolemia is a tube jellyfish, and the research team estimates that it can be up to 46 meters (150 feet) in length. This will make it the longest animal on record. In comparison, the longest blue whale and the longest snake are both around 30 meters (98 feet). However, there are some small words in this record. Dr Nerida Wilson, the chief scientist of the Western Australian Museum, collected a small sample of a deep-sea starfish (also known as the slime star) for DNA analysis. This allows scientists to accurately record every species they find and compare it with existing records. Image source: Visual China
