Designer masks made with basketballs, vinyls, sensual lace, a packet of a serving of McDonald's potato chips or a simple crochet hook. A virus-shaped world ball. A colorful illustration with Madrid, Parisians, Tokyo or Florentine peeking out from their balconies. Collages with toilet paper and maps of Europe attacked by the pandemic. Applause. Then they realized it was not just their acquaintances, but that art production in general was skyrocketing. "So we ask ourselves: what is going to happen to all those works that people are creating in their homes? " Recalls Calvo. In response, they decided to create a necessarily digital museum that would collect all that "quarantine art" or "covid art" to give it visibility, in addition to creating a feeling of unity and hope .

From photographs to poems or videos

The main filter when choosing the pieces is that they are related to the current moment: the Covid19 crisis. There are collages, videos, photographs, illustrations , songs, poetry, animations, oils ... Every technique is welcome. At the moment, 300 publications are posted on the profile of the Covid Art Museum, which already has more than 29,500 followers .

The collection continues to grow, as they receive between 20 or 50 requests a day . Hence, its founders have to perform the function of art curators when selecting them. What matters most to them, apart from the artistic quality of the work, is the originality and the message. "It must tell a feeling, an experience or an observation related to the pandemic because in this way it is possible to connect with the museum visitor," say those responsible.

Although where more enthusiasts have been shown is in Latin America and the United States.

Among the artists, there are professionals of all kinds: graphic designers, illustrators, writers , 3D specialists, photographers, actors, musicians ...

Face masks or gloves, everyday icons

Any viewer who browses the museum's profile can understand each work, since products such as toilet paper, face masks, gloves or balconies have become icons of the day-to-day, an everyday thing in the lives of millions of people across the planet.

As for the future, the promoters of this cultural initiative are optimistic and know that the pandemic will end, but art does not. For this reason, the museum will remain as a digital archive to collect testimony of how people lived through the Covid-19 crisis, "what they felt and what reflections arose in them," added Calvo. "We also have plans to give it another digital support apart from instagram and hopefully we can do a physical exhibition to make the museum more tangible."

Whoever wants to participate in the project, should send their proposals to the instagram account @CovidArtMuseum through a direct message or to the email covidartmuseum@gmail.com. Similarly, you can post an image and tag it, or use the #CovidArtMuseum hashtag .
