• Interview Salvatore Esposito. "It is a mistake to believe that a murderer cannot be a good father"
  • Coronavirus: an actor from 'Gomorra', locked up with the corpse of his sister killed by coronavirus

Ciro di Marzio hardly speaks, quasi non parla , he says things with his eyes. He is one of the protagonists of the Gomorra series with Gennaro Savastano and, now, he is the star of the film The Immortal: A Gomorrah film , which premiered on April 14 on the Sky platform and can now be seen in Spain.

Marco D'Amore, the actor behind the character, is on this occasion -as he did in Gomorrah- also the director. Now he is in Caserta, a town about 20 kilometers from Naples, confined. But when the film was released in Italy last December, it answered the questions of this newspaper in Rome about a film that serves as a spin-off and that relaxes the anxiety to see the fifth season of Gomorrah . It also allows knowing Ciro's childhood, the reasons for his immortality.

Why does Ciro hardly speak in the film? There are two reasons. The first is that, when a person experiences shocking, incredible or desperate situations, it sometimes happens that you do not want to relate to others. You talk when you need something, some kind of feedback, but Ciro doesn't want this. The second reason is that in this film I am also the director, so working with my eyes gave me the opportunity to attend to what others were doing. If I listened more than I talked, I could see better because the character is complex and there are many action scenes. Luckily I have been able to work with the people I loved, with whom I have grown artistically. My partner Francesco Ghiaccio was my third eye. He would watch me and get mad at me when he didn't give the maximum. I can't imagine Marco D'Amore without giving the maximum ... Well .. When he was tired ... he would say to me: "Force, force! What was Marco D like? "Amore when you read Roberto Saviano's novel Gomorrah , what did you feel? I know Roberto always, we went to the same school, when he was in Fifth I was in First. I watched him with admiration, I knew he wrote .. When the book came out in 2006, I was on a theater tour, a friend had obtained photocopies and we began to share them with everyone. I was very young but I knew that reality because it was also mine. The book leaves you in shock first because of its beauty, the ability by Roberto to mix fiction and reality. For me it was like getting into the usual bathtub and finding a new sea. Did things change after its publication? It is undeniable. Roberto had the ability, through words, to put the spotlight about some neighborhoods and specific situations q Which, then, have radically changed. It is true that many people in the territory do not enjoy Roberto's work, but it is also true that, from that moment, youth associations, neighborhood movements, etc. began to be generated, which have begun to annoy politicians. Gomorrah movie from the series? Mateo Garrone's film is beautiful but does not have the complaint as its objective, he wanted to impact through the violence and beauty of the characters. We have done something else, perhaps a more journalistic job, we have built antiheroes, we have made family epics and I think this is interesting It gives the impression that the characters have an anachronistic sense of life and death. A very intense way of life.Of course, the last Neapolitan kingpin killed a few years ago was 19, had two children, had been in prison, had become the head of his neighborhood. They know they have little time for life, they know they have to live fast and they see death as normal. With The ImmortalDid you, like Saviano, want to stir consciences? My intention was to move, to make my heart beat. Even people full of violence and surrounded by violence have their emotions, their desires, their sensibilities, and they want to be hugged at night, like the others. I do not want to justify it, only to say that, at some point, we have all been like Ciro as a child, what happens is that then life can transform you, in one thing or another. How do you think we see Gomorra from abroad? I receive more messages from Spain and the United States than from Italy, they love Salvatore and me very much. I think that in different parts of the world awareness begins to arise about what happens in their own places, because every country has its criminal organization. Then there are ways of living, of course. The first theatrical show I saw was Russian and I was impressed with how they touched and how they greeted each other. Gomorra is beautiful in itself also because it reflects an Italian way of life, how she eats, respect for the elderly, the family ... What would you think of Ciro if you met him? Can I tell you the truth? In life I have learned not to judge. So many things have happened to me. But I have had the opportunity to travel thanks to my work, I have met people of all kinds and I have learned from all of them. People who have made big mistakes in their lives and then been able to make amends. Cyrus is an antihero from another era, made of dust and divinity. So it is interesting because he is a total character, because you feel that he has a huge heart, but on that heart he has drawn a cross. In the film we see the origin of his pain, the death of his mother to save him. And he feels that he has killed her. Could criminal organizations like those described in the film really be destroyed? The words of Judge Falcone, who was murdered, come to mind. He said that the mafia was a human phenomenon and like all human phenomena it is destined to end. The question is how to accelerate this process, which can only be achieved with cultural education, because when you grow up surrounded by beauty you better understand the differences, and also that the rules are also freedom. Although there will always be abandoned children in parts of the world who wonder, like Ciro, why him yes and me no? If you don't give it to me, I'll take it, how can I take it? With a gun. One of the countries that is suffering most from the coronavirus pandemic is Italy. What reflections have you made since a little over a month ago everything started? At first it seemed to me like a dystopian film about the future like so many we have seen in American cinema. Then I connected with reality, I realized the fragility of the human being, vulnerable, delicate. I suffer for those who have lost loved ones and for whom they still need to be cured. Grateful, of course, to those who work in hospitals to guarantee our safety ... Like everyone, I hope it happens soon and we can return to our lives. How can seeing the Immortal serve us now ? You can give two hours of entertainment, which is what is expected of a story that helps us cope with the things of everyday life. I hope that this film succeeds and that the narration of Ciro's life can make the hearts of the audience beat and ignite the debate.
