The Coverage study teams settled in a gymnasium in Bordeaux. - Clément Carpentier / 20 Minutes

  • It is a first in France. The Bordeaux University Hospital is launching an outpatient clinical trial.
  • On a voluntary basis, all people over the age of 65 and affected by Covid-19 can follow one of the four treatments tested by the CHU.
  • Patients will be followed physically or remotely by their attending physician and by the Coverage study team.

Usually athletes meet there to compete or supporters of the Union Bordeaux-Bègles to debrief the match of their favorite team. But that was before the Covid-19 coronavirus epidemic. Today, the Albert Thomas gymnasium, annex to the Chaban-Delmas stadium, resembles above all a mini-hospital. There are doctors, interns, externs, pharmacists, nurses, administrative staff ... All participate in a study unique in France and even "in the world" according to Yann Bubien, director of the Bordeaux University Hospital.

For the first time, an outpatient clinical trial has just been launched in the fight against the pandemic. “The objective is to treat the disease as soon as possible to avoid any deterioration and to keep patients on an outpatient basis. We are going to test four treatments, including three new ones on nearly 1,000 people. The study will continue until the epidemic is over and an effective drug is not found. This will be our base here, ”explains Professor Denis Malvy, member of the scientific council.

A study based on volunteering

Two starting criteria to participate in it: be positive for Covid-19 and be over 65 years of age. "They are the most fragile people so we must take care of them as a priority," said a doctor. The clinical trial is voluntary and it is the healthcare professionals who will redirect their patients to the study teams. They will meet patients who wish to undergo treatment. Treatments that will only be done orally. No patient will be welcomed on the Chaban-Delmas stadium site.

On the occasion of their first visit, the members of the Coverage study will choose the treatment best suited to the patient and will give him a monitoring kit with blood pressure monitor or an electrocardiograph. “This person will be followed very closely with three visits in the first ten days. Either from his attending physician or from ourselves. There will also be regular phone calls and he will have to use the Rafaël platform set up by the CHU if possible or send us information by email or phone on his state of health, ”specifies Alexandre Duvignaud, infectious disease specialist.

Treat the disease as quickly as possible

Among the four treatments, there will be an antihypertensive, an antiviral and also the now famous hydroxychloroquine. Suddenly, Professor Raoult risks being satisfied since it will be used very early, the implementation of treatments at the Bordeaux University Hospital must be done no later than three days after the positive test at Covid-19. And when can we expect first lessons? “It remains extremely difficult to say. We are not going to start setting dates like with the Discovery study. But it will have to wait at least a month anyway, ”according to Alexandre Duvignaud.

In the meantime, the Gironde clinical trial on an outpatient basis could very quickly produce children on the national territory. Hospitals in the north and east of France have already approached the Bordeaux University Hospital to set up the same system and participate in the Coverage study.
