When the Ministry of the Environment examined the status of garbage flowing into the sea, it was found that many shopping bags were drifting off the coast of Kanto and Tohoku.

The Ministry of the Environment, together with Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, examined the types and amounts of garbage drifting in 470 locations around Japan from June to February last year.

As a result, for example, shopping bags were found most frequently off Kanagawa Prefecture, with a maximum of 52 drifting per square kilometer, and 42 offshore approximately 450 km off the coast of Tohoku.

Styrofoam was drifting up to 73 per square kilometer off the coast of the Sea of Japan in Yamaguchi Prefecture, 51 off Shimane Prefecture and 42 off Kagawa Prefecture.

The place where garbage is concentrated has the same tendency as the previous survey, and the Ministry of the Environment estimates that garbage is being transported to specific sea areas under the influence of ocean currents and wind.

According to the Ministry of the Environment, "garbage drifting around Japan may spread further into the Pacific Ocean. I want them to think about the impact of the garbage they have produced."
