More than 13,000 deaths in France, new drop in intensive care patients

The coronavirus balance sheet now stands at 13,197 dead since the beginning of March, including 8,598 in the hospital, or 554 more in 24 hours. 4,599 died in retirement homes (Ehpad).

Director General of Health Jérôme Salomon, however, reported a "pale ray of sunshine": the number of people in intensive care fell slightly for the second consecutive day. 7,004 people currently require heavy care, or 62 less in 24 hours.

Reinforced controls in several regions

Like the previous weekend, some 160,000 police and gendarmes will be mobilized to control and avoid departures. Prefects have also tightened confinement in certain regions. In the Bouches-du-Rhône, where the holidays begin, containment controls will be reinforced on the coast, on the motorway and in the massifs.

In Corsica, "only one adult per family" can do their shopping for one hour per store, in addition to reinforced controls on beaches and places to walk. In Nice, nine of the poorest districts are subject to a curfew from 8 p.m. instead of 11 p.m., the town hall claiming a "non-compliance with the rules". In Paris, Alsace or Saint-Etienne, individual sports are more strictly supervised, while group outings are prohibited in Ardèche.

Over 100,000 dead worldwide

Worldwide, the coronavirus has now passed the 100,000 death mark. Europe remains the most affected continent, with more than 70,200 dead. Italy has the highest number of deaths (18,849), followed by Spain (15,843) and France (13,197). The UK, for its part, recorded 980 additional patient deaths, a new record bringing the total toll to 8,958 deaths.

In the United States, the country where the pandemic is progressing most rapidly, more than 486,000 cases have been diagnosed and more than 18,000 deaths have been recorded.
