  • "Most" of the doctors in a survey did they really consider that hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin are the most effective drugs among the molecules available?
  • 6,200 doctors around the world were interviewed between March 25 and 27 on the different approaches to treat Covid-19.
  • 37% cited hydroxychloroquine.

Did doctors really consider hydroxychloroquine "as the best treatment for coronavirus" in a "study"? The claim was launched on April 3 by Philippe Herlin, an economist, on Twitter. His claim was then repeated on Facebook.

A few days later, on April 10, Didier Raoult's team alluded to this position in a new publication on the treatment of 1,061 patients. "In a recent survey, most doctors around the world considered that hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin [an antibiotic] are, among the available molecules, the two most effective drugs against Covid-19", writes the team of the professor of the IHU Mediterranean Infection, who fights in favor of the administration of this treatment.

Philippe Herlin, as he said in a second tweet, and the team of Didier Raoult allude to a poll published by Sermo on April 2. The survey was carried out among 6,200 doctors, of all specialties, from 30 countries, including France, Spain, Italy and the United States.

The doctors were interviewed on an online platform from March 25 to 27. Sermo is a site for doctors, which regularly produces surveys. The site has forged partnerships with survey institutes and pharmaceutical companies.

"Most" of the doctors really considered that hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin are the most effective drugs among the molecules available? Questions about the treatment of Covid-19 were only asked of doctors who have treated patients with the virus, says Sermo. 37% of these doctors believe that hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine is the most effective treatment, among the 15 options presented to them for the survey.

Then 32% believe that azithromycin is the most effective treatment. Equally (32%) believe that doing nothing is the most effective treatment. Finally, 31% would recommend using analgesics, such as paracetamol, in front of Covid-19.

Analgesics are the most prescribed treatment (56%) according to this survey. Azithromycin or similar antibiotics are listed next. Hydroxychloroquine is third, at 33%.
