  • The stock of overcoats intended for the carers of the Nantes University Hospital is exhausted.
  • Over a thousand single-use gowns are thrown away every day.
  • Deprived, the caregivers appeal for donations.

If the availability of masks is no longer a problem at the Nantes University Hospital, stocks of gowns allowing caregivers to cover their uniform, they are exhausted. This is why several hospital workers have launched a call for donations on social networks in recent hours. Objective: find a maximum of blouses, gowns or coats, whatever their shapes.

Resuscitation and infectious disease services, on the front line of care for Covid-19 patients, are those who need it most. It must be said that these disposable gowns are thrown out of the room after each patient visit. “Just for medical resuscitation, we use 1,000 a day. So it runs out very quickly. What matters is being able to work safely, ”says Bénédicte, nurse in intensive care and intensive care.

"We manage with what we have"

"The situation is quite urgent," confirms Vincent Mével, CFDT delegate from the Nantes University Hospital. We manage with what we have. It can be donations of overcoats intended for industrialists, construction companies. We recently received a donation from a veterinary clinic. Anything that can avoid contamination on professional clothing is welcome. Since donations cannot be sterilized, they must still be new, large and long enough to cover the arms and knees.

The mobilization has already borne fruit since more than 5,000 gowns could be recovered in less than 24 hours. "This generosity is great," says Bénédicte. It will allow us to last a few days. But we will need more. "

Transformed patient shirts

In parallel, agents working in the CHU's laundry are also responsible for transforming the hospital shirts usually given to patients by sewing long sleeves on them. The hospital is also testing the effectiveness of gown washing.

Beyond the gowns, concerns are also expressed about the charlottes and sunglasses, which could quickly run out.

"The pressure on the staff is strong but morale is good, reassures Bénédicte. We are fortunate to be in one of the least affected French regions. And we receive so much support that it carries us. "
