Please note, this Biarrot does not wander, is not in a sitting position and this is not really a bench. - Bob Edme / AP / SIPA

The text went unnoticed. This Monday, in a newsletter published on its website, the city of Biarritz recalled that it had decided to "complete the national system" of measures to fight the Covid-19 epidemic by this municipal decree, dated March 20. In particular, the mention "the impossibility of strolling".

Since then, more than two weeks now, it has been "sitting for more than two minutes on a bench or in a similar space" is therefore prohibited. This municipal decree "has no other object than to remind the Biarrots, to avoid their verbalization, the impossibility of strolling on the benches which does not constitute a physical activity", specified on Twitter the town hall, responding to some astonished reactions or acerbic. And to add that this decree was, in reality, "less severe than national measures".

In Biarritz, all parks, gardens, playgrounds, sports facilities, outdoor establishments are closed and access to the beaches is prohibited since March 20. Surfing, like any nautical activity, is therefore prohibited. As for the text "on the benches" does not apply to certain "special circumstances", such as "waiting for the bus or medical services", nor to people who must sit down for "health reasons" .
