  • Scenarios. 30,000 canceled functions

The culture sector in Spain is counting on being in a state of alarm, decreed on March 14 and prolonged for the moment until April 26, having an extension of one more month for its offer. The owners and managers of theaters, cinemas and museums suspect that, when the government releases the closure, their premises will continue to be quarantined for a period that they estimate to be 30 days, as has happened in China.

That belief has been raised today in the round of interviews that the Minister of Culture and Sports, José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, has established with representatives of the sector. Thus, the representatives of the theater production companies have demanded from the Government that the current policy of permissiveness and agility to process ERTES be prolonged for a month in their business, since they believe that they will not be able to reopen the box office until a month later that Spain returns to the street.

The minister, for the moment, has only taken note of the demands of cultural professionals and has promised to maintain a rhythm of one round of interviews every 15 days. In the case of the performing arts, the needs of the sector were expressed last Saturday in a document that included 52 support measures for theater and music. What are the priorities? In addition to extending the term of the ERTES, the businessmen of the scenarios demand a VAT reduction of 21 to 10% "because it is a very clear policy of promotion of employment that can later be recovered by the State through Corporation Tax" and the creation an emergency fund with money. The sector, argue its representatives, needs direct aid that goes beyond delays in obligations. Where should that money come from? Of the 100,000 million euros that the European Union has reserved to reactivate the economies hardest hit by COVID-19. How much money is being talked about? There is no specific figure but the sector has given as an example the aid of 15 million euros that has already been directed to private television. "There is no reason for us not to reach that figure," explain sources in the sector, recalling that 720,000 people live on culture in Spain.

Uribes has promised to bring his agenda to the Council of Ministers, to the autonomous communities and to the meeting that he will have next Wednesday with the other ministers of culture in Europe. For now, the government's new commitment is a plan to promote the consumption of culture that will hit the streets when the confinement ends.
