Abdallah Ahmed-Osman, a Sudanese refugee who killed two people in a knife attack Saturday in Romans-sur-Isère (Drôme), was "embittered" because of the confinement, according to testimonies reported Sunday by a source close to the investigation.

"For the past few days, he has not been feeling well because of the confinement" linked to the coronavirus epidemic, witnesses told investigators, the source said. "He was quite embittered by the situation," according to these concordant testimonies reported from the same source.

Two dead and two injured

Three people are in police custody following this attack perpetrated on Saturday morning in the streets and shops of the center of Romans-sur-Isère: in addition to the assailant, one of his acquaintances and another man of Sudanese nationality.

Two people died in the attack, and two others, injured, are in intensive care but in stable condition. A third person is in the recovery room and two have left the hospital, a source close to the investigation said Sunday morning. The perpetrator obtained refugee status on June 29, 2017 and a ten-year residence permit in July of the same year.

Planned psychiatric expertise

He is unknown to the French or European police or intelligence services, according to the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office (PNAT) which opened an investigation on Saturday notably for "assassinations in connection with a terrorist enterprise" and "criminal criminal criminal association". The first elements of the investigation into Abdallah Ahmed-Osman "highlighted a murderous course determined to seriously disturb public order by intimidation or terror", specifies this same source.

According to a source close to the investigation, the assailant said "do not remember what happened". His hearing had been delayed a bit because he was very agitated after his arrest. A psychiatric assessment is scheduled for this Sunday.

During a search of his home were found "handwritten documents with a religious connotation in which the author of the lines complains in particular of living in a country of disbelievers", according to the PNAT. “A priori” documents written by him.
