Fever, cough, and muscle pain are some of the most common initial symptoms of coronavirus infection. However, there are other signs that may also indicate infection. Conjunctivitis is one of them, as the American Academy of Ophthalmology has just pointed out. This condition may be one of the first signs of infection, but also when the disease has progressed, the organism indicates.

Patients with conjunctivitis could represent cases of Covid-19, explain American ophthalmologists, who detail several studies that show the ability of the virus to infect the conjunctiva of the eye and cause conjunctivitis.

The data, experts continue, suggest that it is not a very common symptom . But it can happen, so they recommend professionals to think about the possibility of Covid-19 when treating a patient with conjunctivitis. Furthermore, they recall, it is possible that in these cases the virus was present in the ocular secretions.

In this sense, they recommend adequate protection of the mouth, nose and eyes when treating patients potentially infected with SARS-CoV-2.

Conjunctivitis is not the only rare sign associated with the disease. Other eye discomforts may also occur. In a series of 534 confirmed patients in Wuhan, dry eye , 12.7% blurred vision, 11.8% foreign body sensation and 4.7% conjunctival congestion were detected in 20.9% (0.5% presented it as the first symptom).
