Ellis Marsalis, a pianist, jazz legend of New Orleans and father of the musicians Wynton and Branford, Delfeayo and Jason Marsalys, has died at the age of 85, a victim of the coronavirus, as reported by the mayor of his city.
The influence of Marsalis Sr. is in his work, which includes around twenty albums published with his signature, and in his role as a popularizer and educator in jazz culture. Marsalis was also the first jazz curator at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and the first president of the jazz studies program at his city's university.
