  • Ellis Marsalis.Interview in San Sebastián

Ellis Marsalis, a pianist, jazz legend of New Orleans and father of the musicians Wynton and Branford, Delfeayo and Jason Marsalys, has died at the age of 85, a victim of the coronavirus, as reported by the mayor of his city.

The influence of Marsalis Sr. is in his work, which includes around twenty albums published with his signature, and in his role as a popularizer and educator in jazz culture. The pianist, who four years ago received the tribute of the San Sebastián Jazz Festival and gave a concert with his son Branford, has been a kind of transmitter and guarantor of the black culture of his region and an ethical example for several generations of musicians .

Marsalis was also the first jazz curator at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and the first president of the jazz studies program at his city's university. Her son Wynton, the great star of the genre of our time, has continued that vocation at Lincoln Center. However, on his visit to San Sebastián, he confessed that his musical weakness was the fourth in the series, drummer Jason. On that visit, Marsalis recognized who was the jazz musician who had impacted him the most: Oscar Peterson.
