The average altitude of the earthquake within 5 km of the epicenter was about 4,661 meters. The epicenter was 77 kilometers from Shiqu County, Ganzi Prefecture, Sichuan, 141 kilometers from Dege County, 158 kilometers from Seda County, 104 kilometers from Darri County, Qinghai, and 138 kilometers from Gande County.

Shiqu County is located at the junction of Sichuan, Qinghai and Tibet on the southeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. According to the China Earthquake Network News Bulletin Catalog, a total of 16 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or more occurred within 200 kilometers of the epicenter in the past 5 years, with the largest magnitude being the magnitude 5.6 earthquake.
