The government wants to increase the number of beds in intensive care to "14 to 14,500", against 5,000 initially, to cope with the influx of patients caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, said Olivier Véran on Saturday.

“France's initial capacities were 5,000 resuscitation beds. They have been increased (…) to 10,000 beds. Now we want to reach a target of 14,000 to 14,500 resuscitation beds nationwide, "said the Minister of Health at a press conference. Olivier Véran also underlined his desire to transfer the seriously ill to other hospitals when necessary.

In Ile-de-France, the situation is increasingly tense: out of 1,500 places in the intensive care units of the Paris region, 1,300 beds are currently occupied. In places, like in Seine-Saint-Denis, hospitals are already saturated.

Since this weekend, transfers have accelerated especially from the Grand-Est. A first evacuation carried out by a military helicopter took place Saturday morning, from Metz, in order to transport two patients to the hospital in Essen, Germany. Forty patients must also be evacuated to New Aquitaine. These transfers take place as part of Operation Resilience, launched by Emmanuel Macron.

In France, 4,273 people were in intensive care this Saturday evening.
