While many expected that the containment linked to Covid-19 implemented in France would generate an increase in the sale of alcohol in the stores of the large distribution, it is in reality quite the opposite which is is produced. According to the company Nielsen which produced these statistics, alcohol sales fell 1.7% during the first week of confinement, relays BFMTV.

Among alcoholic drinks, not all experience the same fate. Beer sales increased 3% from the same week a year earlier. Those of champagnes and spirits, on the other hand, fell by 16% over the same period. In this category, the most significant drop in consumption concerns champagnes, whose sales fell by 69% during this first week of confinement.

The social role of alcohol

For the time being, it has not been established whether the drop in alcohol sales is linked to a drop in consumption or whether the French prefer to consume their personal reserves. If the confinement is to last for several more weeks, it will then be possible to analyze the phenomenon. Another explanation for this decline is to note the social role of alcohol, often consumed in the evening with friends.

The only other category of products whose sales fell in supermarkets is that of hygiene and beauty products with a decline of 3.4%. At the same time, sales of food products have increased significantly, such as pasta, rice or cans.
