  • The 25-year-old artist has been detained since he was indicted for “intentional homicide” in January 2019.
  • He is suspected of being involved in a fatal assault in mid-2018.

Incarcerated since January 17, 2019, the rapper MHD has tested positive for the coronavirus, learns 20 Minutes from his lawyer, Me Elise Arfi, confirming information from BFMTV.

Aged 25, Mohamed Sylla of his real name is implicated in an investigation into a deadly assault in mid-2018 during a brawl between gangs in Paris and was indicted for "intentional homicide". Facts that the popular self-proclaimed inventor of the "Afro-trap", currently detained in the prison of Health, has always disputed.

During the night of July 5 to 6, 2018, a 23-year-old man was knocked down by a car, beaten up and stabbed, at the corner of Saint-Maur and Tesson streets, in the 10th arrondissement of the capital city. The scene was filmed by a witness from a window. The images show a dozen people attacking the victim who died very quickly from his injuries. The police officers of the 2nd DPJ, in charge of the investigation, will quickly favor the hypothesis of a settlement of accounts against the background of rivalry between rival gangs in the 10th and 19th arrondissement.

21 prisoners tested positive

Investigators then discovered that MHD's car, a black Mercedes, was the one that helped topple the young man. At the time of his arrest, in January 2019, his lawyer had indicated to 20 Minutes that the vehicle in question, which had been found charred in a car park in the 19th arrondissement, was "used by several people in the neighborhood" from which his client originates because the latter was often "on the road". In addition, several witnesses affirmed to the police that they recognized the artist on the scene. To date, a dozen people are under investigation in this case.

The artist is far from the only one to have been infected in prison. According to figures communicated to AFP on Friday by the Prison Administration Directorate, 21 detainees were tested positive for covid-19, and 471 others were placed in medical confinement. In addition, among the 42,000 prison officers, around fifty were tested positive, and nearly 800 of them were placed in quarantine.
