While the toll of the coronavirus epidemic is increasing, with 1,696 deaths and 13,904 hospitalizations, the health response is organized, notably through evacuations of patients in less affected French regions. At the same time, Emmanuel Macron will chair a meeting with the social partners in the morning to take stock of the crisis. Follow the situation live.

France lives on Friday an eleventh day of confinement, decided by the government to fight against the epidemic of coronavirus. Drastic measures made necessary to curb the spread of the virus, which has already claimed nearly 1,700 lives and caused around 14,000 hospitalizations. In this context, the capacities of hospitals appear increasingly limited and push the authorities to organize evacuations of patients. Follow the situation live.

1,696 deaths, 365 deaths in one day

Thursday evening, the latest assessment of the epidemic brought to 1,696 the number of deaths of Covid-19 recorded in the hospital since the beginning of the epidemic at the end of January. 3,375 patients were in intensive care (+548 in one day) out of a total of 13,904 (+ 2,365) patients hospitalized in France. With an additional 365 deaths in 24 hours, including that of a 16-year-old girl in the Paris region, the coronary heart disease epidemic continues to spread rapidly.

Evacuations of patients are increasing

While the "wave" is falling on Ile-de-France, twenty patients have been evacuated from Strasbourg on a medical TGV: it made a first stop in Angers before reaching the end by day its terminus, Nantes. The patients were to be distributed in the hospitals of these two cities as well as in Le Mans and La Roche-sur-Yon, regions less affected for the moment. Other evacuations have already been carried out by air and sea with the help of the army, in particular from the hospital in Mulhouse. We explain here why this establishment continues to be saturated.

Macron brings together the social partners

Emmanuel Macron gathers the social partners in audioconference at 11 am, to discuss in particular the means of reconciling pursuit of economic activity and protection of employees. The purpose of this meeting is "to discuss with the social partners the difficulties encountered by employees and companies (…), to take stock with employees and business leaders on protective measures at work and to to inform all of the players of the aid measures and systems put in place by the government for businesses and employees in the context of the crisis, "said the Elysée.

15,000 dead mark crossed in Europe

With 274,955 cases recorded, including 15,999 deaths, Europe is today the main focus of the pandemic and accounts alone for more than half of the cases declared in the world. While there were still fewer than 10,000 cases on March 7, the number of patients has more than doubled in the past 6 days, going from 122,707 cases on March 20 to more than 270,000.

The World Health Organization (WHO) notes however "encouraging signs" in Europe. Thus, the increase in the number of cases in Italy seems to be slowing "but it is still too early to say that the pandemic has reached its peak in this country", according to the WHO. Spain has passed the 4,000 dead mark.

Explosion of cases in the United States, "tsunami" in London

For several days, scientists have been wondering if the epicenter of the pandemic is not moving to the United States. There, while Donald Trump opposes prolonged confinement, the death toll is rapidly increasing. On Wednesday, the country deplored 1,031 dead and 68,572 confirmed cases, according to a count of Johns Hopkins University, becoming the third country with the highest number of confirmed cases of patients, behind Italy and China.

In the United Kingdom, a country which has waited before putting in place containment measures, the city of London is facing a "tsunami" of seriously ill patients, according to an official of the public health service. The spread of Covid-19 has accelerated in recent days, with authorities recording 115 deaths in 24 hours. The total death toll is now 578 deaths linked to the disease and 11,658 cases of officially registered contamination, announced Thursday evening the government, which ordered the people three days earlier to stay at home to fight against the spread of the virus.
