Doctors have announced harsh conditions in the French border region of Alsace, as a university hospital staff in Strasbourg has been told to work even if they have the new Coronavirus, and it is no longer possible to have infected patients over 80 on ventilators.

Instead, employees of the German Institute for Emergency and Disaster Medicine in Tübingen write in a report to the government of Baden-Würzburg, which borders Alsace, that instead elderly patients are given "end-of-life care with narcotic and hypnotic pills".

According to the report seen by the German news agency (dpa), German specialists in crisis medicine visited the University Hospital in Strasbourg last Monday, and warned of a "concrete threat" posed by the worsening situation.

They called on the local German authorities to make preparations in light of a "high state of alert" when the outbreak reaches similar proportions across the border.

According to the report, a patient requiring a respirator will be transferred to Strasbourg every hour. There are now, they say, 90 beds equipped with the necessary equipment, and the hospital is working to increase its capacity. The report said that only three of 90 patients in intensive care, below the 50, and without suffering from previous diseases.
