The Extremadura Health Service (SES) sent ten respirators to the Community of Madrid on Tuesday to collaborate in the care of patients affected by coronavirus in Madrid hospitals. However, this contribution "in solidarity with the material that we have been able to contribute" - as indicated by the Junta de Extremadura - has received criticism from the professions that work daily in the front line of battle in the Extremadura hospitals, the doctors who attend to the most serious patients in the Intensive Care Units and in the Emergency Department .
This is stated by EL MUNDO the coordinator of the ICU of the University Hospital of Badajoz and president of the Extremaduran Society of Intensive Medicine and Coronary Units (SEXMICYUC) , Demetrio Pérez Civantos (60 years).
This doctor has 30 years of experience in Intensive Care Medicine and is a member of the European Society of the sector and its Evaluation Committee: "Extremadura is currently in a situation of receiving and not giving respirators", he denounces, because "we have the right respirators and therefore we are not in a position to donate. "
Before evaluating the number of "high-end" respirators being used in Extremadura, the doctor complains that the Extremadura Board has not consulted them on the decision to send the shipment to Madrid. "It has been a unilateral decision, nobody has called the professionals, the doctors who are in the ICU and in the ER, who know what is happening," he warns to extend his complaint to the rest of the decisions that are being made since it began. This crisis: "They do not call us professionals neither for this matter nor for any other; we have been trying for more than a week to get in touch with them and we received no response."

On the delivery of the ten respirators, Demetrio Pérez clarifies that "we would be delighted to be in solidarity with other regions, but as long as we had the needs covered in advance, and at the moment we do not have them, and with the addition that everything indicates that the situation is going to get worse. "

At the moment, there are 424 infected people in home isolation and the epidemic affects 189 toilets.

In Extremadura, moreover, the percentage of health professionals infected with the coronavirus is double the national average. The latest official data puts it at 189 professionals, 19.50% of all infected. Last Saturday it reached 26.27% when the quick tests were not yet being used.
"There has been a lack of forceful measures to prevent professionals, especially at the beginning of the problem, hence the high number of health workers affected, by the lack of protective material, of EPIS , which tell us that they will arrive every day. , but they don't finish doing it ", he complains. Finally, like all the sector (unions, associations, etc.), the doctor also criticizes the statements of the Extremaduran Minister of Health, José María Vergeles , who this Monday pointed out that half of the health workers affected by the coronavirus were infected outside the job.
For this, it refers to the statement from the College of Physicians, which expressed its "absolute rejection and discomfort" for these statements "very unfortunate and inadequate" at a time when doctors are "fighting on the front lines of battle", to protect the population, "putting public health before their own and that of their families, as they are permanently exposed to contagion due to lack of material and protection measures," the Pacense school indicated.
For the group, these proportions "show that in Extremadura, adequate measures are not being taken to protect health personnel" with serious "deficiencies" in protective equipment.
