• Consumption Supermarket hours and online shopping: Day, Mercadona, Carrefour, Lidl ...
  • At home, waiting lists for online shopping from the supermarket

Confinement to fight the spread of the coronavirus in Spain forces citizens to stay in their homes for as long as possible. Although you can go out shopping , many are the people who prefer not to go daily and choose to stock up on food. In these cases, questions arise as to what foods I can freeze , how to do it or what is the safest way to defrost them.

Keys to freezing food

1. Cover the food when freezing it to avoid the formation of ice crystals, drying out or burning. For this you can use containers suitable for freezers, freezing bags or plastic or silver paper.

2. Label the food indicating the name, quantity and freezing date.

3. Do not fill the containers to the maximum , especially when they store liquids since the freezing process dilates them.

4. Do not keep food for more than 9 months : although there are foods that can be frozen for less than 9 months, such as cheese or seafood.

5. The freezer temperature varies depending on the stars. A good one must have at least 3 stars, which means a temperature of -18ºC.

6. Do not freeze any hot food . They should always be at room temperature or cold.

What foods can I freeze

Meats : Meat has been traditionally frozen. It is recommended to put it in the freezer as soon as possible and having previously cleaned it.

Fish : like meat, fish is recommended to be frozen as soon as possible and after cleaning.

Fruit : most fruits can be frozen, although some will modify their texture. The ones that are best adapted to freezing are bananas, pineapple or red fruits.

Vegetables : fresh vegetables can be frozen generally. However, it is not recommended to do it with those that we are going to take raw or those that have a high water content such as lettuce or cucumber. The best thing is to blanch and let cool the vegetables that we are going to freeze.

Legumes : the best option to freeze legumes is having previously cooked them.

Milk and cheese : Although both can be frozen, they do modify their textures. In addition, they are foods with a long expiration date.

Pan : It can be frozen without any problem. It is appropriate to do it in slices to get the right amount we need and in an airtight bag to avoid odors.

Potatoes and eggs : freezing potatoes and raw eggs is not recommended.

How to defrost food

When defrosting food , ideally it should be gradually and without sudden changes in temperature. Thus, we can transfer the food from the freezer to the fridge and from there to room temperature.
