Between so much health maelstrom caused by the coronavirus pandemic and in one of the health epicenters, the Gregorio Marañón Hospital in Madrid, there has been an event that, at best, remembers how life continues to make its way, hope is sustained, and a Once again, the courage of healthcare professionals is reaffirmed. A girl of one and a half years, suffering from severe heart disease, has received a new heart, thanks to the coordination of the team of the Children's Heart Area of the Gregorio Marañón Hospital.

The recipient, Chloe , is a girl who suffered from severe heart disease - dilated cardiomyopathy - as a result of viral myocarditis. As indicated by the ONT security protocols, both the donor and the recipient underwent the coronavirus test and both were negative.

"The intervention lasted about seven hours and a team of 10 professionals participated, including surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, perfusionists from the Cashew, while intensivists, surgeons and nurses participated in the donor hospital to support and remove the heart", explained Juan Miguel Gil Jaurena, head of Children's Cardiac Surgery at the Gregorio Marañón Hospital.

The current state of the minor is good , it is in the Intensive Care Unit and evolving favorably, he added.

In the context of the epidemic we are experiencing, the donation and transplant activity is being affected, although efforts to continue with the programs to the extent that the epidemic allows persist. “The entire network is focusing in particular on those patients who are in a more serious situation and those who have more difficulties in transplanting, such as children. For this reason we are achieving pediatric transplants, thanks to the great work of the transplant teams, "said the director of the National Transplant Organization (ONT), Beatriz Domínguez-Gil.

Due to the epidemic situation, the ONT has agreed with the Autonomous Communities and transplant hospitals a special device that mobilizes different teams in the city where the cardiac donation occurs to prevent the transfer of professionals from the receiving center. Typically, the transplant team is the one to go to remove the organ and, although in kidney, liver and lung donations, these types of procedures are already produced to avoid unnecessary movements, the heart had not been performed.

On this occasion, teams from three hospitals in different autonomous communities were used for the extraction, who collaborated closely, and in extraordinary coordination with the Gregorio Marañón Hospital. "Despite this exceptional pandemic situation, our children's hospital maintains urgent care for its pediatric patients thanks to the efforts of all its staff and institutional support, including all care for children with heart disease," said Constancio Medrano, head of Children's Cardiology from the Gregorio Marañón University Hospital.
