Five prisoners from the Béziers penitentiary center (Hérault) were placed in police custody, after incidents that occurred on Saturday, inside the prison.

Dozens of prisoners refused to return to their cells after the walk, says Raphaël Balland, the public prosecutor of Béziers. About fifty police officers had to intervene in the remand center, to restore order. These incidents are related to the implementation of measures within penal establishments to fight against the spread of the coronavirus, in particular the suspension of visits to visiting rooms, indicates to 20 minutes the union FO Penitentiary.

Some aggressive inmates

"In one of the walking courses, detainees broke a door, but all finally agreed to reintegrate their cells without difficulty upon the arrival of the police," continued the magistrate. In another court, the intervention of prison officers "was necessary but took place without difficulty, each detainee having been returned to his cell without incident," said the public prosecutor. Finally, in a third court, the officers were confronted "with some more aggressive inmates and made use of two sound grenades to disengage".

Around 7:30 p.m., all the detainees had returned to their cells.

Five police officers, three detainees in disciplinary quarters

Three detainees were taken into custody for damage to public utility property and committed in a meeting, and two others for aggravated violence for throwing stones and spitting at prison officers. Finally, three other detainees have been placed in the disciplinary unit and will go to the disciplinary committee earlier this week.

Since the implementation of measures against the spread of the coronavirus, incidents have broken out in several remand centers, notably in Grasse or Perpignan.
