The confinement of the population due to the Covid-19 epidemic obviously has consequences for transport. The number of passengers normally making the ferry connection between Dieppe and Newhaven, in the English Channel, has been halved, reports Paris-Normandy on Wednesday.

The Danish company DFDS Seaway, which provides the connection, has already made this decision for several days. This measure is applied until April 6 and could be renewed depending on events.

The link is still operational

Nothing currently prohibits this maritime traffic between France and the United Kingdom. The borders between the two countries are not closed, the United Kingdom not being part of the Schengen area targeted, in the same way as the European Union by the border closure announced by the Head of State in his speech from this Monday. The permission mainly benefits British nationals, who return to their country, specifies the regional daily.

The Danish company said in a statement that "reservations are still possible for passengers wishing to return home, with requirements, etc. With regard to freight transport, we will continue to provide the crossings at the frequency and capacity necessary so that vital goods can be transported to stores and businesses. ”

Sanitary measures

Precautionary health measures are taken to ensure the health of travelers and airline agents. In the terminal, the cashier hostesses protect themselves and keep a distance from the public, says Paris-Normandy . In the waiting room, travelers must also move away from each other.

On board, as in any other frequented vessel, the same space cannot accommodate more than 100 people simultaneously. Many contact points are cleaned regularly. Disinfectant gel is also available for passengers and staff. But no question of distributing masks: they will only be used in an emergency, adds the local daily.
