SAMU 31 command post at Purpan hospital. - FRED SCHEIBER / 20 MINUTES

  • Since Tuesday noon, restrictions and containment measures have been in effect on French national territory.
  • If the emergency services are very mobilized on the cases of Covid-19, a part of their traditional activity has decreased, in particular that linked to the victims of road accidents or nocturnal brawls.

Containment should have an effect on the spread of the coronavirus epidemic within the next few days. In any case, this is the wish of the authorities who, since Tuesday noon, have placed restrictions on the movement of residents.

But this measure has already had an impact on emergencies, the more traditional ones that are taken care of daily by the firefighters and the Samu services in Toulouse.

Fewer cars, fewer accidents

“The activity is rather calm and that is the positive side. In terms of trauma care due to road accidents, we recorded a decrease of about 80%. The accidentology of outdoor activities has also decreased, there is less practice of sport and therefore fewer fractures. There is also a drop in festive activity, alcoholism, brawls and everything related to it, "notes Professor Vincent Bounes, director of Samu de la Haute-Garonne. So many people who will not find themselves hospitalized, especially in intensive care for severe cases.

An effect also felt by officials of the departmental fire and rescue service. “We are seeing a stabilization, even a slight drop in activity. We expect to face this epidemic, we have observed a strong mobilization, in particular of our volunteer firefighters, there is a real momentum ", explains lieutenant-colonel Sébastien Lamadon-Périé, operational director of Sdis de Haute-Garonne .

The firefighters, all of whose vehicles are fitted with suitable protections, have handled around ten cases of suspected Covid-19 during the last two days out of the 150 interventions carried out daily over 24 hours. The Samu 31 has so far little hospitalized Covid-19 patients.

Calls to 15 continue to flow. "It went down a bit, but we went up to 3,000 calls a day, half of which were for the coronavirus. These are calls for advice or respiratory symptoms, ”notes Vincent Bounes, whose services have received the support of students to answer questions from patients but also from healthcare professionals.
