  • Since the start of containment, some running and cycling enthusiasts continue to travel kilometers, physical exercise being allowed (in a very limited setting).
  • These excesses would have resulted in the verbalization of certain athletes contacted by the national police via the Strava GPS tracking application, according to a viral screenshot.
  • Contacted by 20 Minutes , the national police denied, and denounced a false account containing his name and logo.

To crack down on non-compliance with the confinement measures in force for (at least) fifteen days in France, does the national police go so far as to track down offenses using the Strava GPS app, which allows athletes to record their physical activities?

This is what suggests a very commented screenshot on Twitter. We can see, below the route of a bicycle ride of a hundred kilometers (far beyond the current distance limits), the commentary on an account entitled "National Police", which uses the logo of the law enforcement.

"Hello, following an anonymous denunciation, we are aware of your breach of imposed confinement. Under article 1 of the decree of March 15, 2020 (sic), set up to fight against the spread of Covid-19, we inform you of your verbalization of a fine of 135 euros. You have 15 days to file a complaint or justify this trip, more information on www.gouvernement.fr ”, says this message. It was published by the account "Dans la Musette", a media on cycling which claims "its offbeat look" and its "more or less dubious humor". Contacted by 20 Minutes , the administrators of the Twitter account indicate having published the screenshot "not knowing if it was a fake or real", with the aim of "encouraging cyclists to stay at home".

FAKE OFF

However, this is, as some internet users suspected, a false verbalization, as confirmed by the information and communication service of the national police (Sicop): "This account is a fake, it has nothing to do with us, the national police have no account on Strava ”.

Sicop further advises to consult the various official accounts of the national police, whose messages are written in a very different way from this false verbalization. This also contains an error since it refers to the "decree of March 15, 2020" while the decree at the origin of the confinement is dated March 16.

Finally, a simple search on the Strava app reveals that there are several accounts showing the name and logo of the national police, as can be seen in the screenshot above.

As the Interior Ministry reminded yesterday, confinement remains the priority and any exit from one's home must remain exceptional, in the only cases provided for on the corresponding certificate. For its part, faced with the influx of joggers outdoors and the many questions received on this subject, the Ministry of Sports reminded which physical activities were prohibited, and in which strict framework some could be practiced.
