When more people work from home, plug in remotely or quarantine as a result of the corona virus, the pressure on the internet and its bandwidth increases.

The European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, therefore calls on the public to lower the quality of streaming video entertainment.

"To ensure internet access for everyone, let's switch to standard resolution when HD (High definition) is not necessary," he writes on Twitter, where he also introduces the #SwitchToStandard speed tag.

Thierry Breton also turned to Netflix streaming service, which heeded his request.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, after talking with Breton, has decided that the service will lower the quality of its video streams for 30 days, which is expected to reduce bandwidth usage by 25 percent on the service's European network
