The notepads of nurses in the six wards of infection in Wuhan First Hospital densely recorded their daily communication with Granny Qin, a 92-year-old patient with neo-coronary pneumonia, for one month.

"I'm on WeChat with your two daughters every day, telling them about you and reassuring them."

"I showed your daughter a picture of what you were eating, and they were very happy to see you eating."

"We help you wash your head, just sit and wash it. It's much more comfortable to wash your head."

"I'll give you some milk and sugar-free biscuits for you. Both are sugar-free. It doesn't matter. Your post-prandial blood sugar is only 8.9, which is not high."

"Saying you are beautiful." ...

The notepads of nurses in the six wards of infection in Wuhan First Hospital densely recorded their daily communication with Granny Qin, a 92-year-old patient with neo-coronary pneumonia, for one month. Because Grandma Qin was old and had difficulty making ears, the medical staff wrote everything she wanted to say on her paper, which had 21 pages.

Through the text, the nurses cared about Grandma Qin over and over again. The medical staff's meticulous care for the patients was revealed in the lines.

Under the careful care of the medical staff in the six infected wards of the hospital, Grandma Qin's physical and mental condition has gradually improved and she is about to be discharged.

Grandma Qin said, "Here, the nurses are really nice to me. Take care of me, give me milk, wipe my body, soak my feet, and wash my hair. Sometimes my family can't do this carefully. (Medical staff) No one is impatient with me, and no one is unhappy, they all explain to me in a very soft voice, 'What is this for?', 'What is this for?' "

"You are this!" Grandma Qin thumbs up to the nurses who took care of her for a month.

"Grandma Qin is too old to be able to hear us clearly, but she knows the characters, so we write on the paper and communicate with her." Li Chenfang, the head nurse of the Sixth Infectious Ward of Wuhan First Hospital, recounted This is a "paper love" story with Grandma Qin.

92-year-old Grandma Qin has poor hearing, we write to communicate with her

On February 13, Granny Qin, 92, was admitted to Wuhan First Hospital after 30 days of low fever, and was then seriously ill by the doctor. On February 21, due to the patient's older age and poor multi-organ function status, he was reported to be critically ill after reporting serious illness.

Grandma Qin is an elderly patient who is critically ill and our medical staff attaches great importance to her. Every time she shifts, she will be mentioned, and she usually cares about her diet and physical recovery. Most of the medical staff in our six infected areas come from neurology, but also respiratory doctors, psychologists and Chinese medicine practitioners. Everyone used their expertise together to provide her with comprehensive treatment and care.

When she was first admitted to hospital, Grandma Qin had little appetite and poor teeth chewing function, so we prepared her with noodles and porridge as a staple food, supplemented with nutrient solution to supplement her nutrition. Later, she recovered a little. When she could eat the box lunch ordered by the hospital, we gave her two portions so that she could choose more soft and chewy dishes.

Grandma Qin's mental health has also been our concern. When she was first admitted to the hospital, her mental state was relatively poor. Since she could hardly hear the people around her and couldn't talk to the people around her, she would inevitably think that everyone didn't care about her.

When I came to such a strange environment from home, I was still unable to go out in the quarantine zone. We understand the state of Grandma Qin.

On March 4th, the “Angel Haven” psychological relaxation and decompression studio was set up on the sixth floor of the outpatient building of our hospital, responsible for the psychological intervention of patients and medical staff in the ward. With the help of "Angel Haven" staff, Grandma Qin's loneliness and fear have been reduced a lot.

Every time the nurses perform daily scrubbing, changing clothes, and soaking feet for Grandma Qin, they will convey to her the belief that you will be okay, and we will always support you. Day by day, patient care gradually allows Grandma Qin felt that we were all really good to her, and slowly she became more cheerful.

One time Grandma Qin said to us, "The nurses are really nice to me here, take care of me, give me milk, wipe my body, soak my feet, wash my hair, and sometimes my family can't do this carefully." She didn't talk much to people before, but now when we talk to her, she will be very happy.

When we first tried to communicate with Grandma Qin, she looked at us blankly, even if we spoke loudly. After learning about Grandma Qin's poor hearing and literacy, the nurses wrote what she wanted to say to her and communicated with her.

Grandma Qin's family has always been concerned about her. Her daughter also added a lot of doctors and nurses to WeChat. We also left her the department's phone number so that she could call at any time to care about Grandma Qin's health.

When the family called, she could not hear her family's words, and my colleagues wrote those words to her. "I sent your picture to your eldest daughter. She was very happy and relieved. "She eats as much as you want, and eats more quickly."

On March 10, I met Grandma Qin in a wheelchair in the corridor. She was waiting for the elevator to the CT room. I greeted her, but she didn't hear her clearly. At this moment, when I saw her frowning, she said to her, "You are so beautiful, grandma." A nurse next to me wrote "said you are beautiful" on the paper. My grandmother was very happy after seeing it and said with a smile, "I'm an old woman!"

Caring for the elderly with serious illness, always eating, drinking, and sleeping

Mild young patients tend to take care of themselves. We are supplemented with some psychological support and construction, but the situation for elderly patients in bed is very different. We must meet the most basic physiological needs of the elderly and take care of them. Diet, bowel movements, and sleep make their bodies more comfortable and satisfy their spiritual needs.

The work we do every day is trivial, including 2 to 3 hours of turning over the patient, moving the limbs, constantly watching the elderly's urine does not need to be changed, drink or drink, hungry or hungry, is there any discomfort ... … We are all used to doing these things.

Unlike before, caring for patients was more collaborative, helping patients ’families to wash their hair, bathe, change diapers, soak their feet, etc. But now in the unaccompanied ward, we will take the initiative to complete these things.

It may sound easy for the elderly to soak their feet, but it is actually very difficult for our nurses in protective clothing. Due to the poor breathability of protective clothing, our clothes are wet, dry, and wet. It feels stuffy when dry and cold when wet. In addition, protective clothing is not tailor-made, we can not walk in large strides, it is difficult to take water or squat, which adds a lot of burden to the work of soaking feet.

We need to wear two layers of masks every day, and a surgical mask over the N95 mask, which will make us have a strong sense of belching. When I was outside the quarantine zone, my heart rate was more than 80 times per minute. When I went in, it would usually reach more than 100 times per minute, and my heart rate accelerated when I took two steps.

After putting on the goggles, we can clearly see that the water is flowing up the goggles. Although we have also done some anti-fogging treatments, it only eases the problem of fogging, and the water column will still remain on the lenses. Sometimes nurses make forms and write nursing records in the ward, almost all squinting and approaching the computer to complete.

Layers of protective equipment also make our daily communication very tiring. Two layers of masks will make our sounds very small, while protective clothing and hats cover our ears, the audible sound becomes even smaller. . I remember the day when the patient was admitted to the department, many people's voices were dumb.

"Everyone is doing their best to persist"

△ Medical staff wrote on the gloves, "City one cheers, feels seven is the best"

Medical staff have long insisted that there will be some physical discomforts in the front line. I also told my colleagues, "If you are uncomfortable, you must not carry it. We still have many people. If you are not comfortable, you can come out." Do your best to persist.

Once a nurse had a diarrhea, I helped her transfer a class, and the next day she took the initiative to ask me, "I don't have diarrhea now, I can go to work and don't need to transfer my class anymore."

I really felt sorry for them when this happened, but I was really touched by their persistence.

We have nurses who have just come to work in the hospital and have been assigned to work in isolation. I ca n’t bear to see that these young children have to take on such heavy tasks from the beginning.

There is also a 49-year-old nurse who works night shifts in the quarantine area. At first I did not know her age, and she was not assigned to the night shift. When I looked at the information later, I realized that she was 49 years old.

There was also a second-born mother in our original department. She sent me a message saying, "Head nurse, I am ready to go to work at any time." Her child is only more than 5 months old. I certainly wouldn't arrange her to work, but her heart made me feel great support.

Because of this epidemic, some of our nurses did not marry, and even more heartbroken, some relatives of medical staff also died of new coronary pneumonia. The father of two doctors in our department, the father of a nurse, and the mother of a nurse all died of new coronary pneumonia years later, but they still insisted on working online, which is really difficult.

Sticking to the front line, we are seeing patients like Granny Qin getting better and better, and finally being discharged, we are all very happy. Their recovery is a great encouragement to us and supports us to fight this outbreak to the end.
