Former film producer Harvey Weinstein was convicted of sexual assault and rape by a New York state court on February 24. Now the court announces that the sentence will be 23 years in prison.

He has constantly asserted his innocence and that the sexual contacts occurred with consent. He was cleared of the most serious charges that could have resulted in a life sentence.

Weinstein was convicted on two counts of assault and rape by two different women. One of the charges he was sentenced to carries a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison and the other charges point to four years in prison.

Both women spoke in the courtroom on Wednesday, the news agency AP writes.

Accused by over 80 women

After the verdict, Weinstein was taken to hospital by ambulance. According to CNN, he has suffered from various health problems since the verdict fell. He arrived in a wheelchair to take advantage of the sanction on Wednesday, according to the TV channel.

During the metoo movement, over 80 women accused Harvey Weinstein of abuse, harassment and rape. Another lawsuit against Weinstein is being processed in the state of California.
