The Gymnasium theater in Marseille - Caroline Doutre

Baskets, boxes and balconies. The oldest theater in Marseille, which must be the subject of a major renovation, already condemns several floors, almost half of its hall: the gauge of the Gymnasium theater goes from 680 to 313 seats. Without waiting for the start of construction, the city clearly decided not to take any risks.

A preliminary study on the state of the building, carried out at the beginning of February in order to see how to restore the theater, indeed revealed "disorders" in the device of support of the stages. A meeting of the city's technical services was underway this Monday afternoon.

“Outside the walls” shows

"The Gymnasium is not threatened," reacted its director, Dominique Bluzet, in a press release in which he displayed a reassuring tone, after the surprise he mentioned in the press: "We had the assurance of the city and the department as regards the financing of the work to come, ”he wrote, without further details for the moment on the schedule and the scope of the work.

In the post-rue d'Aubagne and municipal context, and in this building located a stone's throw from La Canebière, the subject is not only cultural. He did not escape Sophie Camard, head of the Marseille Printemps list in the sector:

#Marseille I learn that the Gymnasium theater is threatening to collapse and that the City is urgently closing the 3 upper floors.
Don't think you're getting used to the collapse of our city. We know that the task is immense.

According to Dominique Bluzet, the Gymnasium theater "presents no risk" and certain shows will continue to be hosted there while waiting for the works. However, many should be played "outside the walls" to accommodate a maximum of audiences. And also limit the financial cost of reimbursements.
