The United States signed a peace agreement on Saturday February 29 with the Afghan Taliban rebels. The US delegation, led by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and negotiator Zalmay Khalilzad, and the Taliban delegation, led by their political leader Abdul Ghani Baradar, initialed this document in Doha, Qatar.

The agreement calls for the "gradual and immediate" withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, as well as the exchange of thousands of prisoners between the United States and the Taliban and direct peace negotiations between Kabul and the insurgents, which are due to begin on 10 March.
