On the eve of March, the time is in winter. And Météo France is formal: the 2019-2020 meteorological winter (December, January, February) is the hottest on record in France since the measurements began in 1900, according to the provisional assessment published on Friday.

Average temperature is expected to reach 8.1 ° C, an increase of 2.7 ° C from seasonal norms. With these measures, winter 2019-2020 rose to the top step of the podium, ahead of winter 2015-2016 (+ 2.6 ° C) which held the record so far. Winter 1989-1990 took 3rd place in the ranking (+ 2 ° C).

Up to 25 ° C in the Southwest

"A remarkable mildness prevailed throughout the season (from December 1 to February 29) and was accentuated in February, which already ranks among the three hottest months of February," explains Météo France in its provisional balance sheet. "The temperature was on average more than 2 ° C above normal in December and January and more than 3 ° C in February with several peaks of remarkable sweetness," adds the organization.

Some regions have even recorded records of softness. Temperatures have sometimes exceeded 20 ° C in the south of France, and even 25 ° C in the southwest. More generally, "despite a few occasional coolings, France did not experience a cold peak during this winter," explains Météo France.
