The town hall of Saint-Jean-de-Braye (Loiret) has suspended its twinning with Tuchow after the adoption by the Polish city of an anti-LGBT + resolution, mayor Vanessa Slimani announced on Tuesday. This municipality proclaimed itself in May 2019 an area "free from any LGBTI ideology" (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex).

“We decided that we had to position ourselves because it does not correspond to our values. The Polish situation is worrying for LGBTI rights, ”said the mayor. The municipal council therefore adopted a wish Friday asking for the suspension of relations between the two cities, as well as explanations "on the reasons" which led the Polish municipality "to adopt a resolution contrary to human rights".

"We have to be vigilant"

“We wanted to remind them of the values we carry. France carries the declaration of Human Rights and it applies to all, without discrimination, "recalled the elected representative of this commune in the eastern suburbs of Orléans. “We also want to remember that in the Loiret, there were internment camps for homosexuals and Gypsies during the Second World War. The Jargeau camp was about ten kilometers from Saint-Jean-de-Braye. We have to be vigilant, ”insisted Vanessa Slimani.

The resolution was submitted by the municipal councilors of the PiS (nationalist conservative party, in power in Poland), and adopted by the municipal council. But it "is not the result of an initiative of the inhabitants," reacted the mayor of Tuchow, Magdalena Marszalek, on the website of the Polish city.

International dimension

“We are not homophobic, our town is not closed to the world. We are open to life, to Europe and it will be so as long as I am its mayor, ”insisted Magdalena Marszalek. “I had warned the PiS advisers of the possible consequences. But no one had thought that this case could take on an international dimension, "she added on Tuesday in the daily newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza.

“The French have sent a signal that Tuchow is homophobic. Why should the entire municipality be held responsible for a group of councilors? ", She regretted. In December 2019, the European Parliament asked the Polish authorities to revoke all these resolutions. These indeed ask elected officials to "refrain from any action aimed at encouraging tolerance towards LGBTI people", according to the text voted by MEPs.
