Swedish-British pop artist Mabel began his evening at the O2 Arena in London by performing the hit song "Don't call me up" in front of a cheering crowd. Shortly thereafter, she was called to the podium by artist colleagues Ellie Goulding and Jorja Smith to receive her award figurine, which she responded by calling out her mother Neneh Cherry's name.

Nominated earlier

Mabel broke through 2017 with the single "Finders keepers" and in the UK she has a large audience. Her first full length album "High expectations", which was released last summer, managed to place herself on the UK album list for several weeks. At best, the album reached third place.

Earlier this year, Mabel was nominated for the Swedish Grammy Gala and the P3 Gold Gala. But at the end of both gala she stood without a prize, and even when she was nominated for the Brit Awards 2018 and 2019 she went home empty-handed. But now that suite is broken, and Mabel celebrated with Neneh Cherry who himself was awarded two awards at the 1990 Brit Awards.

Anger at the few women

The pre-discussion for this year's Brit Awards has revolved around the lack of female nominees in categories such as this year's song and album of the year, which among other things the award-winner Paloma Faith noted when she stated "we are here to praise a very under-represented group tonight, namely the men" before she presented the award for best male international artist to rapper Tyler, the Creator.

As only one of two women, Mabel was nominated for this year's song, for "Don't call me up". Instead, it was Lewis Capaldi who received the award, for the song "Someone you loved". He took the opportunity to thank his parents for, as he put it: "I don't know, you were with each other."
