Wuhan returnees in quarantine in Carry-le-Rouet capture the sunrise - Hector Rampal / AFP

  • A Vacanciel group holiday center in Carry-le-Rouet served as a quarantine site for returnees from Wuhan fleeing the coronavirus epidemic.
  • These French nationals left the area this weekend, a few days before the arrival of the first tourists.
  • To definitively turn the page, the center will be thoroughly cleaned. The mayor of Carry believes for his part that this episode made a publicity stunt for Carry.

"Me alive, I would be paid a fortune, I would not spend a day in this holiday center, once they are gone. This is what we could hear, a few days ago, when the Vacanciel group's holiday center welcomed quite unusual tourists, straight from China to flee the coronavirus epidemic.

At the beginning of February, more than a hundred returnees from Wuhan were placed in quarantine in this holiday center in Carry-le Rouet, the facade of which then toured the media. An unusual attention to say the least for the quiet seaside resort of the Côte Bleue, which had so far gained its fame from its sea urchins and one of its illustrious inhabitants, Jean-Pierre Foucault.

This Sunday, the holiday center has definitively emptied of the 181 French nationals who lived in the place for 14 days, a mask on their noses. Another major challenge now presents itself to the Vacanciel group: limiting the impact of this funny parenthesis on the reputation of the center, in order to reassure future customers and potential other tourists who would book a room in the premises. However, the holiday center welcomes its first group of tourists ... this February 22, just a few days after the end of quarantine.

Deep cleaning for a “safe” vacation

From the first day of quarantine, the Vacanciel group therefore launched a communication operation, by opening on the Net an information site specially dedicated to the situation of the Vacanciel club in Carry-le-Rouet. In a press release sent also on the first day of quarantine, Vacanciel wants to be extremely reassuring to its customers. "We work closely with the Ministry of Health and the prefecture of Bouches-du-Rhône and will guarantee, at the end of this very special stay, the absence of any health risk for our teams as well as for the holidaymakers who arrive after this period ”, can we read.

This Monday, in a new press release, Vacanciel is still trying to reassure its customers. Following the departures of returnees from Wuhan, "a company specializing in cleaning hospital premises will clean the entire establishment following hospital protocols, insists the group. It is therefore completely safe for the Club to welcome its teams and customers again without any risk. The first holidays will arrive at the end of the week. "

A publicity stunt for Carry

"We know that, fortunately, none of the people who stayed at Carry-le-Rouet were infected," we rejoice on the side of Vacanciel. We still wanted to implement decontamination. "And to affirm:" It is a little early to say the impact of this stay on the reservations to come. On February 22 arrives a group which has maintained its reservation. And the next reservations are in April. We will then have real visibility, but there have been no messages of concern to my knowledge… ”

Asked by 20 Minutes about this Friday in front of the holiday center of Carry-le-Rouet, Agnès Buzyn, then still Minister of Health, assured that she will "probably organize seminars of the State services before vacationers n 'come there'. Since then, the ministry has changed its lead, and the Paca regional health agency says that a "meeting with hospital staff" on the subject will be held, without being able to provide more details.

What quickly turn the page of the coronavirus which burst into the daily life of Carry-le-Rouet and its mayor. Initially quite dissatisfied to learn from the press about the arrival of these returnees, Jean Montagnac is now delighted for somewhat… surprising reasons “It made people talk about Carry, there were images of the sea, of the center , of our city everywhere, in all the media, he rejoices. An advertising operation of this type would have cost us tens of thousands of euros! "Thank you coronavirus ...
