Quillan, in Aude, is one of the 106 municipalities that make up the future Corbières-Fenouillèdes park - N. Bonzom / Maxele Presse

  • For ten years, a “regional natural park” project has been in the cards in the Corbières-Fenouillèdes, between the Aude and the Pyrénées-Orientales.
  • From March to July, the communities will have to express themselves on this issue.
  • The park's vocation is not only to act on the conservation of biodiversity, but also on the development of tourism, the economy or agriculture.

And if, tomorrow, we were going for a weekend in the Corbières-Fenouillèdes, as we are going to the Camargue or the Cévennes? For ten years, a natural park project has been in the cards, in this very rural territory, straddling the Aude and the Pyrénées-Orientales, on 1,840 km2, in Occitanie (the map, here). On February 12, the State promised the Corbières-Fenouillèdes the precious classification of "regional natural park". No doubt a little hastily. Because the project is not quite complete.

"We are at the end of the procedure," said Clothilde Duhayon, director of the mixed union responsible for the Corbières-Fenouillèdes case, to 20 Minutes . We have just passed the public inquiry, we are now awaiting the feedback from the investigating commissioners, which we hope will be favorable. It will then be up to the communities, the communes, the intermunicipalities, the departments, and the region to decide for or against the park project. This will last four months, between March and July. Depending on the position, it will be up to the State to decide whether or not to classify it. "

"Support communities and citizens to carry out projects"

And if the biodiversity of this territory, where the golden eagle is a bit at home, will obviously be at the heart of the project, the field of action of the Corbières-Fenouillèdes park should be much wider. "The richness of our environmental heritage is our main asset," says the project manager. But the idea is also to act on culture, agriculture, the economy, tourism. The objective is to create a dynamic, make the territory more visible, to support communities and citizens to carry out projects. "

The future Corbières-Fenouillèdes park is in no way an additional layer on a mille-feuille, promises Clothilde Duhayon: “It is a complementary tool, to offer a boost to the territory. To build up files, get funding. "

"We are not going to revive the industrial economy of the Formica factory"

The Corbières-Fenouillèdes could, for example, focus on developing tourism, preserve the numerous Cathar castles, supervise the development of wind power, which has made many enemies in the sector, or try to boost the local economy. In the Haute-Vallée de l'Aude, for example, the region has been disaster-stricken since the closure of many factories. 40 years ago, in this territory between Carcassonne and the Pyrenees, we made shoes or hats. And the Formica factory, which was running at full speed, was flooding the kitchens with its ultra-trendy wooden furniture.

“We are not going to revive the industrial economy of the Formica factory, warns Clothilde Duhayon. But we can imagine new forms of economic development, with crafts, or "green tourism", to ensure that these disaster-stricken areas stick their heads out of the water a bit. We will also be able to look into the fate of abandoned factories. "It is also a way of boosting an economy that has collapsed," says Hervé Baro (PS), president of the park's union and vice-president of the Aude department.
