The campaign for the February 21 parliamentary elections began Thursday, February 13, in Iran. Voters will have to choose their 290 deputies from the 7,150 candidates authorized by the regime.

Responsible for the validation of the candidacies, the council of the Guardians of the revolution rejected the majority of the reformist candidates. The council said it rejected these candidates on grounds such as "corruption or infidelity to Islam".

President Hassan Rohani criticized the disqualifications but, like Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, called on the Iranians to travel en masse to vote. "Dear Iranian nation, please do not be passive, do not turn your back on the polls," he urged Tuesday, on the 41st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.

The economic sanctions, the departure of the United States from the Iranian nuclear agreement but also the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani or the plane shot down by an Iranian missile shocked the Iranians and affected their morale. This could cause many voters to turn away from the ballot box.
