Director Bong Joon-Ho's name was the most searched on South Korea's local network Naver, and comments like "I'm so proud to be Korean" were common. Social media in South Korea was swamped by tributes, after Parasit wrote history at the Oscars and became the first non-English-language film to win the Best Film Award.

Joon-Ho celebrated his homeland in the Oscar speech: "We never write to represent our country but this is personal to South Korea," he said.

The government of South Korea also reacted quickly to the success, and tweeted about the locations in Seoul on which the film has been recorded. At the same time, many on social media mocked the reporter who asked the director why he was filming the film in Korean: "She should ask Scorsese or Tarantino why they are filming their own films in English," one person wrote about the other nominated directors, according to the BBC.

The South Korean film also brought home the best director, best international feature film and best original screenplay.
