And yes, independent cinema also has its Oscars. Called the Film Independent's Spirit Awards or simply Spirit Awards, they took place for the 35th time in Santa Monica, California, on February 8, 2020. They largely honored three films in particular: Uncut Gems , Farewell and The Lighthouse.
Uncut Gems won three awards: best directors, best editing and Adam Sandler, best actor. Lulu Wang's Farewell was awarded two awards: best feature film and best supporting actress for Zhao Shuzhen. Willem Dafoe who stars in The Lighthouse wins the title of best supporting actor, while the film also obtains the prize for the best photo.
Olivia Wilde's Booksmart won the Best Film award and Renée Zellweger was named Best Actress in Rupert Goold's Judy .
The Spirit Awards often herald a few Oscar favorites.
